Walk. Stop. Recite [Vasileios Mangos]

2022
Street action, digital prints on paper
Volos, Greece

I stand on the street, between the Court House entrance and Eleftherias (Liberty) Square, in the city centre of Volos, handing out a series of cards to passers-by. On the front, the cards feature photographs of wildflowers I encountered while walking the Vasileios Mangos trail. Cleared and maintained by Giannis in memory of his son, the path links the city with the village of Stagiates. On the back, each card bears an address and a quote. The cement factory, hospital, police station and courthouse are sites where the Greek state’s repressive forces brutally attacked the protesters and Vasileios Mangos on 13 and 14 June 2020, as they demanded an end to ecological plunder and waste burning in the city. Once these locations have been reached, excerpts from Vasileios’s testimony, published from the hospital on social media, may be recited.

Download, post, print and distribute the derivative works; a poster and flower bundles in English & Greek.

A series of photos I took on the trail “Vasileios Mangos” in Volos accompany Vasileios’ social media post he published from the hospital in June 2020 and the description of the torture he suffered at the hands of the Greek police.
